Semifinals set for YAIAA soccer tournament

Good luck finding two more intriguing soccer matchups than the ones on tap for Wednesday's YAIAA tournament semifinals. In one game, you get a pair of division champions, one of which won a District 3 title last year. In the other, you get a matchup of Division I rivals who split their two contests this season. The action will start at 5:30 Saturday at Susquehannock. First, high-scoring Division II winners West York will play Division III champs Biglerville. The Bulldogs outlasted South Western, 4-3, in their quarterfinal Monday behind three goals from Fred Lucas (pictured above in a photo submitted by West York parent Bob Gay). Biglerville, meanwhile, used a frantic late-game comeback to stun Northeastern, 5-4, double overtime. The Canners are the defending district Class A champions. Together, the two teams combined for nine goals on Monday. Could more fireworks be in store? The late game, scheduled for 7:30, will feature a rubber match between rivals Dallastown and Central York. The Panthers, who handed the Wildcats their one and only loss of the season on Oct. 7, held off York Suburban on Monday, while Dallastown blanked York Catholic. Expect that one to be "hotly contested," as Dallastown's Christian Kaschak put it Monday.
