Local physicians to host talk on concussions

A pair of locally based physicians will host a discussion Monday on the recognition and prevention of concussions among young athletes. Dr. Todd Barron and Dr. John Deitch will host the event, called "Heads Up: Concussion in Sports," at the Holiday Inn Holidome on Loucks Road in York Monday at 7 p.m. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, is targeted at parents of young athletes. It will cover everything from how to better diagnose and treat concussions, to new technologies used in concussion management. "We're going to emphasize that the whole purpose of concussion management is not to keep athletes from playing, but to make sure they're healthy when they do go back and play," Barron said Friday. The topic of concussions in sports has received extensive coverage during the past year or so, as more information surfaces on the long-range effects of the injury. Barron said he hopes the event will provide parents with a better understand of the issue. "There's been a tremendous amount in the national press, and I think it's our duty as professionals to provide correct information to the public so they understand what the issues are," Barron said. "I think more kids think, 'If I tell my parent that I have a concussion, they're never going to let me play again.' And that's not the case."
