Eastern York to honor former coach Friday


The help kick start its 35th anniversary season, the Eastern York football program will honor former head coach Ellsworth Kissinger in a ceremony before Friday's 7 p.m. game against York Suburban.

Kissinger is a football lifer in these parts, making his name first as a standout athlete at William Penn. He went to play quarterback at Southern California in the mid-1950s, and as a senior led the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory over Notre Dame in 1955.

More importantly for the Golden Knights and their fans, Kissinger returned to oversee the start of Eastern York's football program in 1975. Kissinger also went on become a longtime assistant at Central York, where he was offensive coordinator from 1980 to 1999.

The celebration of Kissinger, now 75, should begin at around 6 p.m., with a reception and program to follow at 6:30 p.m.

The game will by the YAIAA Division III opener for both teams.
