South Western turns to Good at quarterback

South Western has settled on a starting quarterback for its season-opener Friday.

Coach Don Seidenstricker will turn to junior Jesse Good for the Mustangs home matchup with Gettysburg. Good had previously been locked in a training camp competition with fellow junior Zach Gross.

Good may not have the size you look for in a typical signal caller -- he's listed at 5-foot-9 -- but that's less of an issue in South Western's Wing-T attack. Seidenstricker said Good played well in both of the Mustangs' preseason scrimmages against Cumberland Valley and Red Land.

"He's a smallish kid, but he's got good quick feet and he really is a prototypical Wing-T quarterback," Seidenstricker said Wednesday afternoon. "We haven't had one of those in a few years. We've had more passers."

Last year, South Western also went into training camp unsure of who its quarterback would be. The Mustang coaches eventually settled on senior Ian Smith, who set a single-season program record for passing yards.

We'll see if Good can have similar success.
