Andrew Nicholas, Austin Tillotson verbally commit to Monmouth

Eastern York rising seniors Andrew Nicholas and Austin Tillotson have been playing basketball together since the third grade.

Today, they made a decision that ensures they'll continue to be teammates beyond high school.

Tillotson and Nicholas both made verbal commitments on Monday to Monmouth, a Division I college in New Jersey.

"Just the fact that they've decided to go to school together, no one ever gets that opportunity," Eastern coach Larry Fisher said. "For them both to have so many different places they could go and things they could do, to settle on the same place, that tells you something."

Nicholas originally committed to Rutgers last summer, but opened his recruiting back up after Scarlet Knights coach Fred Hill resigned this spring. The 6-foot-6 wing chose Monmouth over offers from Siena, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona and Towson, among others.

"With me, I had bigger offers but I would have had to sit out my first year or two," said Nicholas, who up until a month ago had offers from Penn State and St. Joseph's. "(At Monmouth) we can both go in and play right away."

Monmouth had long been a top choice for Tillotson, a 6-foot-1 point guard who earned AP first-team all-state honors in Class AAA last season. Tillotson chose the Hawks over offers from Vermont, Bucknell and Delaware, among others.
