Who to watch at the District 3 track and field championships: Part one

District 3's top track and field athletes will trek to Shippensburg on Friday and Saturday to take part in the district track and field championships. We'll have plenty of coverage from both days, but in the meantime, I figured a little bit of a primer is in order.

So with that in mind, here's Part 1 of a two-part series in which we break down a few of the York-Adams athletes to watch at this year's championships. First up, the girls' favorites. We'll have the boys' post up sometime late Thursday or early Friday.

For complete seedings and a time schedule for this weekend's events, head over to the District 3 website.

Khaddisha Arnold, Central York

The Panthers sophomore finished seventh in the state last year in the 100 meters, but hasn't quite built on that success this season. She is seeded 15th in the district in the 100 meters, with a qualifying time of 12.54. Most recently, Arnold finished second in the 100 at the YAIAA meet to Delone Catholic's Sierra Moore. Arnold is also seeded seventh in the 200 meters (25.70)

Central York's relay team

Arnold is a part of this group -- along with Megan Lundy, Briana Fells and Kadie Surgenor -- which is seeded first in the 4x100 relay (49.52) and fourth in the 4x400 relay (4:05.63). Among that group, sophomore Megan Lundy could also make some individual noise. She's seeded fourth in the 400 meters and 10th in the 200.

Lily Corsaro, York Suburban

The Suburban sophomore cruised to victories in the 1,600 and the 3,200 at the YAIAA track championships, winning by a full nine seconds in the latter (11:52.1). Corsaro will be seeded fourth in the 3,200 and eighth in the 1,600.

Kaila Funk, Dover

The Eagles junior is an interesting case. She has missed most of this season due to chronic foot inflammation and other leg injuries. She has only competed in a handful of meets, including the Dallastown Invitational and the YAIAA championships. Still, Funk will be seeded first in the pole vault (as one of four girls to clear 11 feet) and is the 12th seed in the girls' 200.

Another Dover athlete, Laure Rowlands, will be second and fifth in the high jump and triple jump, respectively.

Janice Erbe, Delone Catholic

The senior, pictured above right, is a top seed in several events: the 100 hurdles (second), 300 hurdles (first) and the long jump (second). Erbe is also part of the Squirettes' top-ranked 4x100 relay team. Erbe did pull out of a few events at the YAIAA championships due to a leg injury. Will that linger into this weekend?

Erbe is part of a stacked Delone girls' team. Fellow senior Mariah Robertson, above left, is seeded first in the 100 hurdles and third in the long jump, while sophomore Sierra Moore is seeded fifth in the 100 meters and second in the 200. Sophomore Stormie Hibshman won the javelin at the YAIAA championships and has qualified first in the district event.

Yep, it could be a big day for the Squirettes.

Georgia Williams, Bermudian Springs

The Eagles senior is the top seed in the girls' pole vault, having previously cleared a height of 11 feet, 4 inches earlier this year. She's also seeded second in the triple jump (35-00.25) and sixth in the high jump (5-00.00).

Rachael Kotula, Bermudian Springs

The senior is a threat to win any of three events: the shot put (seeded third), discus (second) and javelin (second). She won the discus at the YAIAA championships, and finished second to Hibshman in the javelin and Dallastown's Margo Britton in the shot put.
