York Suburban picks Zortman as football coach

York Suburban's three-month search for a new football coach has finally ended.

Former Trojans assistant Craig Zortman was approved as the program's new head coach at a school board meeting Monday night. Suburban athletic director Larry Ludwig confirmed the hire on Tuesday.

Zortman certainly is familiar with the program: He spent the last few seasons as head coach for the Trojans ninth grade team, and before that coached Suburban's seventh and eighth grade squads.

"He's very familiar with the kids and did a very nice job at that level for us," Ludwig said.

Zortman replaces Bill Kerr, who left Suburban in February to take the vacant head coaching job at Susquehannock. Kerr was 18-14 in his three seasons with the Trojans, and led Suburban to a 7-4 record in 2009.

Suburban will open its 2010 season at Susquehannock on Sept. 3.

Zortman's hire leaves just one head coaching vacancy among YAIAA schools. Kennard-Dale has yet to replace Doug Wilkinson, who resigned in March.
