Bobcats stay at No. 1 in PVCA state rankings

A few York County teams were fed a spoonful of reality this weekend at the Bobcat Invitational, which attracted some of the state's top teams. Only two of the nine YAIAA schools who entered the tournament -- host Northeastern and Central York -- made it out of the play-in round. Neither of those two made it past the quarterfinals.

Still, Northeastern held steady at No. 1 in the latest Class AA state rankings released by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association. Central York dropped two spots to No. 3 in the Class AAA poll, while Eastern York remained at No. 9 in double-A.

Northeastern and Central actually met in the first round of the championship bracket on Saturday. The Bobcats rolled to an easy two-set victory, 15-10, 15-3. Northeastern lost its next match to Hempfield, 15-12, 15-12, in the quarterfinals. The Black Knights were voted the No. 7 triple-A team in the latest poll.

Pennsbury, which rose to the No. 1 slot in triple-A, won the tournament, beating Cumberland Valley (No. 4 in Class AAA) in the finals. In all, the Bobcat invitational attracted eight of the top 10 teams in triple-A, and two of the top 10 teams in double-A. So maybe that spoonful of reality wasn't so big.

The good news for local volleyball fans: Northeastern and Central could meet again this weekend. Both will take part in the Koller Classic at Central York, along with Dallastown, New Oxford and York Suburban.
