Hoops roundup: YAIAA goes 5-for-5 in states

Talk about a banner day for York-Adams hoops.

YAIAA teams went 5-for-5 on the opening night of states on Friday. All five teams will next play Tuesday in their respective tournament's Round of 16.

Here's a recap of the winners.

-- The Eastern York boys

pulled away to a 68-42 victory over District 2 foes Coughlin, led by Austin Tillotson's 21 points. The Golden Knights (29-0) will play District 12 runners-up Murrell Dobbins Tech (17-8) -- a first-timer at states -- which edged Springfield Delco.

-- On the other half of the boys' AAA bracket, York Suburban overcome an early hole to down Greater Johnstown, 61-46. The Trojans' next opponent is a familiar one for area hoops fans. Suburban (23-5) will face District 3 runners-up Lancaster Catholic (23-5), a winner over Pottsgrove on Friday.

-- For the fourth straight year, the York Catholic girls opened their Class AA state tournament with a win over District 12 foe Bodine. The Irish (25-3) won this one 59-22, paced by 23 points from Kady Schrann. York Catholic will play Springfield Montco (16-9) from District 1. Springfield beat Lake Lehman 54-48 on Friday.

-- Also in Class AA girls' play, Delone Catholic (21-5) used 19 points from Sierra Moore to defeat District 12 champ Freire Charter, 50-39. Next up for the Squirettes, a matchup with District 11 champions Tamaqua (25-2) on Tuesday.

-- Finally, the Red Lion girls used their typically stingy defense to secure a 44-35 victory against Hazleton Area. The Lions (25-4) next play Council Rock South (21-7) from District 1, which beat Reading on Friday.
