Why not have more flexibility for District 3 sites?

One reader is angry that the William Penn-Red Land and York Catholic-Trinity District 3 boys' basketball games are being played way over in Chambersburg on Saturday.

"Where are these people's brains at," he asked. He called the site choice "absurd," especially considering the troubled economic times we're living in.

He has a point. Chambersburg is about 55 miles from York on Route 30. Depending on how many miles per gallon your vehicle gets, it's going to cost you $15 to $20 in fuel to see Saturday's game.

To be fair, the sites for Saturday's games were set by District 3 before it was known who the participants would be. And Chambersburg High deserves to be able to host basketball playoff games.

But there should be some flexibility in the District 3 scheduling process. Something that allows organizers to call an audible and switch up some of the sites. Common sense dictates that three York County teams and one Cumberland County team -- and their fans -- shouldn't have to drive all the way to the center of Franklin County to see a District 3 quarterfinal basketball game.
