Anderson headed to Howard

File the post two slots below this one in the "Whoops" category.

Central York star tailback Charles Anderson has indeed chosen his college destination. He'll attend Howard University, a historically black college in Washington D.C. Anderson chose a full scholarship to the Football Championship Subdivision school (formerly Division I-AA) over the chance to walk-on at Temple or Connecticut.

"It is (a relief)," Anderson said. "It came down basically how the decision would affect my family. We sat down as a family this week and came to a decision."

Anderson said he signed his letter of intent to Howard Tuesday night, but his commitment couldn't become official until Wednesday -- the first day football recruits can officially commit to a school.

Anderson, the YAIAA's leading rusher last year, fielded interest from several schools -- including Division I Akron. But his interest in the Zips fizzled after the school changed coaches in December, and that helped make room for Howard, which Anderson visited for the first time two weeks ago.

"I liked the campus a lot, and I liked the environment," Anderson said. "It was really just the coaches. I liked talking to them, and the players were cool. I just felt comfortable there."

Anderson was a workhorse at tailback for the Panthers last year. He racked up 1,863 rushing yards and 20 offensive touchdowns in helping lead Central to a share of the Division I title and District 3 Class AAAA playoff berth.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder was also a key cog in one of the YAIAA's best defenses, collecting 45 tackles while playing mostly defensive end.

Anderson wasn't sure yet what position he would play at Howard.

"He was one of the two or three maybe four kids on our team that made all the difference for us," Central coach Brad Livingston said. "The load he carried for us on offense was just tremendous."
