YAIAA girls' basketball power rankings 1/21

A little later than expected, but here's another round of girls' power rankings to take in.

As always, previous week's ranking is in parentheses.

1. West York (1) -- The Bulldogs are all-but entrenched here after their 31-point rout of Delone Catholic last week. At 14-0, an undefeated regular season looks to be within reach. Although West York will have to survive games at New Oxford and at Red Lion the next two weeks. Also, kudos to Paige Elliott for cracking the 1,000-point mark on Tuesday.

2. Red Lion (2) -- In some ways, the Lions are about as under-the-radar as a 14-1 team can be. Teams like West York, Delone and York Catholic are trendier picks to make a postseason run, but Don Dimoff's squad just keeps winning. The Lions are second in the YAIAA in team defense, allowing 31.5 points per game.

3. York Catholic (4) -- The Irish and Squirettes continue to flip-flop. York Catholic (11-2) is more than just Kady Schrann. Sophomore guard Rachel Forjan (9.5 ppg) and senior forward Brittany Hicks (12 ppg) are both having solid seasons. How those players -- and others like Carly Marks and Karli McFatridge -- develop will likely determine how far the Irish go this year.

4. Delone Catholic (3) -- Friday night's blowout loss to West York was just one of those nights for the Squirettes (11-2). Such an off-night offensively was a surprise for Delone, which is second in the YAIAA in points per game (58.4).

5. New Oxford (6) -- The Colonials (12-2) scored a crucial, 50-40 win over Spring Grove last week, and are still in the thick of the YAIAA Division I title race. New Oxford owns the league's stingiest defense, which is allowing 31.1 points per game.

6. South Western (8) -- Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the league's biggest surprise. The Mustangs went from winning six games last year, to being 10-3 (8-2 in Division I) this year. A win against Spring Grove last week might have been South Western's biggest of the season to date.

7. Spring Grove (5) -- Suddenly, the Rockets don't look like such a safe bet to run away with the Division II crown. Spring Grove (11-4, 6-3) is a game ahead of Kennard-Dale in the division after back-to-back losses to New Oxford and South Western.

8. Dallastown (7) -- The Wildcats (9-5) have won four of five games, including victories over Dover and Eastern York this week. Dallastown doesn't have a single player averaging double figures scoring, although senior guard Jenna Miller has hit that mark each of the last four games.

9. Kennard-Dale (10) -- The youthful Rams had won four of five before dropping a close contest to South Western on Wednesday. Most of Kennard-Dale's scoring comes from the interior -- its three starting forwards (Devon O'Kane, Mariah Smith, Sara Tarbert) scored 39 of KD's 51 points against Central York on Tuesday.

10. Bermudian Springs (NR) -- The Eagles are up to 9-6 after wins over Fairfield and Hanover last week. That mark deserves credit, but Bermudian has feasted mainly on lesser competition..
