Six hoops games to keep an eye on Friday

It's pretty hard to replicate the excitement of a Friday night during high school football season. But you might not get closer to it than this Friday, which features a slate of attractive hoops games on both the boys' and girls' ends.

Here are six games worth keeping an eye on tomorrow.

BOYS

Red Lion (10-2, 7-1) at York Suburban (12-1, 7-1), 7:30 p.m.

Even though this won't count toward either's league record, both teams have a lot at stake here. Suburban is still trying to shake off a lopsided loss to Eastern York on Monday, and knocking off an impressive, quad-A opponent would do the trick. Red Lion, meanwhile, just scored a statement win at home against William Penn on Wednesday, and would like to carry the momentum from that win forward. These teams have some stylistic similarities -- both favor a half-court set and rely heavily on defense. The Lions and Trojans have the fourth and fifth best defenses, respectively, in the YAIAA in terms of points allowed.

West York (8-2, 7-0) at William Penn (11-3, 6-1), 7:30 p.m.

This game is probably more important for William Penn. A loss would be their third in seven days -- quite a shock for a team that looked to be cruising along this time last week. Troy Sowers said after Wednesday's loss -- in which the Bearcats scored a season-low 47 points -- he was worried about his team being fatigued. We'll find out a little bit about William Penn's character against a very sound Bulldogs team which has flown under the radar a bit so far.

Dallastown (6-6, 4-4) at Dover (9-4, 5-2), 7:30 p.m.

A crossover game between two teams that look fairly evenly matched. Dover has had quite a resurgence this year, thanks in large part to experience and a stout defense that's allowing 37.9 points per game -- second best in the YAIAA. The Eagles will have their hands full against the league's leading scorer, Four McGlynn, who dropped 25 in a win over South Western on Wednesday.

GIRLS

York Catholic (9-2, 4-2) at Eastern York (7-4, 4-3), 7:30 p.m.

The Golden Knights have righted themselves after a rocky start to the season. They've won four of their last five, but they'll have to conjure up quite the effort to knock off the Irish. Even though York Catholic hasn't always looked sharp this season, but its only two losses have come to West York and Delone Catholic -- nothing to be ashamed of there. Not to mention the Irish might still be smarting a bit after Monday's loss to the Squirettes.

Delone Catholic (11-1, 7-0) at West York (12-0, 6-0), 7:30 p.m.

I'll be at this one, and needless to say I'm looking forward to it. There's a real interesting dichotomy between these two teams. The Squirettes boast super sophomore Sierra Moore, the leading scorer in the county who dictates so much of what Delone does. West York features a corps of five senior starters that have been building toward this season for years now. I'll be interested to see who the Bulldogs put on Moore. Liz Kane did a solid job on York Catholic Kady Schrann earlier in the year, so she might be a logical choice.

Spring Grove (11-2, 6-1) at New Oxford (10-2, 6-1), 8 p.m.

Real interesting crossover match between two even squads. New Oxford will need a big game from its main scorer, senior Julia Antonelli, who dropped 22 in a victory against Central York on Wednesday. Spring Grove doesn't typically rely as much on a single scorer, but it has players capable of a lighting up the scoreboard: Codi McMaster poured in 27 points Wednesday against Northeastern. The Rockets have scored 214 total points in their last three games (71.3 ppg).
