YAIAA boys' basketball power rankings 1/12

Did you miss us?

Yes, we took a little hiatus on the power rankings, partially because there weren't that many games in the few days following New Years. Also, I wanted to let Monday's slate of games -- which included York Suburban-Eastern York and Delone Catholic-York Catholic -- play out. Maybe that's taking the easy way out, but oh well. Sue me.

In any event, we'll kick things off with the boys, where the Golden Knights solidified their spot at the top...

Previous week's rank in parentheses.

1. Eastern York (1) -- Thumping York Suburban was an eye opener. We knew this Golden Knights team was good, but that good? At 9-0, they still haven't won a game by less than 26 points. But a daunting schedule this week, including three games in three days this Friday-Sunday, will test Larry Fisher's boys.

2. William Penn (3) -- This team is far from perfect. They can go through shooting droughts and are still developing their big men. But boy are the Bearcats exciting, playing an up-and-down style that's producing more than 80 points per game. WP (11-2) can take a big step toward another Division I title with a win at Red Lion Wednesday.

3. York Suburban (2) -- Monday's loss was a setback, and exposed some of the Trojans' flaws. But a team doesn't go 11-0 to start a season by accident, and Tom Triggs' squad will get back on the metaphorical horse. It won't be easy though, with a visit to Delone Catholic Wednesday and home game against Red Lion on Friday.

4. Red Lion (5) -- This is a big week for the Lions. They host division rivals William Penn on Wednesday, then head to York Suburban Friday night. Winning one -- or both -- of those games would be another encouraging sign for Steve Schmehl's maturing side.

5. West York (4) -- Sophomore guard Luke Cable has matured into a reliable scoring threat for the Bulldogs (7-2) averaging in double figures so far this season. He'll need to be sharp if West York is to upset William Penn Friday and gain a huge, statement win.

6. Hanover (6) -- Last week's win against York Catholic was big for the program, even if the Irish are down this year. It cemented the shift in power that has been taking place all season in Division IV. At 10-1, the Nighthawks look poised to run away with the division title.

7. Dover (8) -- At 8-4, the Eagles have already surpassed their win total from all of last year (seven). The big reasons: A rock solid defense and the offensive production of Seth Warren, who scored 28 in Monday's win over Northeastern.

8. Central York (7) -- The future looks bright for Marty Hasenfuss' team. The Panthers' leading scorer is a sophomore (Tremaine Bowman) and fellow soph Jalil Ford did an admirable job clamping down on Dallastown's Four McGlynn Monday.

9. Delone Catholic (9) -- The Squires are 8-3. Their three losses: Hanover (twice) and Eastern. No shame in any of those defeats. Delone held Bermudian to 25 points in a win Monday.

10. Dallastown (10) -- The Wildcats (5-6) are a hard team to figure out. They nearly beat William Penn one night, then commit 26 turnovers in a loss to Central York. Less hard to figure out is just how good junior Four McGlynn is. He leads the league in scoring.
