Three from area named PFN first-team All-state

Three YAIAA athletes were named first-team All-state by the Pennsylvania Football News on Tuesday.

Central York linebacker Kyle Baublitz and Spring Grove punter Keith Stambaugh earned first-team honors for Class AAAA, while West York linebacker Darion Bundy made the AAA squad.

Baublitz was actually named to the first team at defensive line -- the position he will play at Penn State next season. The senior piled up 123 tackles this year, displaying a combination of size (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) and athleticism rare for a high school player. He led to Panthers to an 8-4 record and a share of YAIAA Division I title -- their second division crown in a row. He drew scholarship offers from around 20 Division I schools (including Clemson, Florida State and Michigan) before accepting an offer to play for the Nittany Lions. He will enroll early at the school.

Stambaugh was a steady presence for the resurgent Rockets, who finished 6-5 and earned a District playoff berth. The junior punted 36 times for an average of 41.1 yards. His longest boot of 73 yards came in a Oct. 9 loss to South Western.

Bundy was a playmaking force for West York, which finished 11-2 and fell a two-point conversion shy of a second straight trip to the District 3 title game. His 66 tackles were tied for third-best on the team, but more impressive were his four sacks, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He was part of a defense that forced 35 turnovers on the season.

Four YAIAA players were named to PFN's second-team: Central York running back Charles Anderson (AAAA), West York defensive lineman Kyle Kinard (AA), Littlestown wide receiver Matt Koontz (AA) and Delone Catholic defensive lineman Wes Smith (AA).

Anderson, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior, led the league with 1,863 yards and scored 19 touchdowns while averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

Kinard, a senior, had 71 tackles and six sacks for the Bulldogs, despite being relatively undersized for a defensive lineman (5-foot-10, 185 pounds).

Koontz, a senior, put up astronomical numbers in the Bolts' pass happy offense, snagging 51 catches for 1,040 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Smith, a senior, had 60 tackles and an eye-popping 15 sacks in helping to lead the Squires to an 11-2 record and a slot in the district title game.

Three others made the PFN's All-state third team. West York running back Corey Harris and defensive lineman Brandon Romeo, and Delone Catholic kicker Porter Strickler. The senior Harris ran for 26 touchdowns and 1,468 yards on 232 carries. Romeo tallied 56 tackles and a sack. And Strickler hit 46 extra points and three field goals for the Squires.

Sixteen other YAIAA standouts were named honorable mention, making a total of 26 YAIAA players honored by the PFN. They are listed below according to class.
