District 3 number crunching

Just spent some time perusing the District 3 football rankings released this week, and though we're not halfway through the football season yet, it's never too early to take a peak at the District playoff picture.

Here's a class-by-class look at a few the YAIAA teams and where they sit in this week's rankings.

Class AAAA (Top 16 makes playoffs)

3. William Penn -- After handling Red Lion at Horn Field on Friday, it's getting harder and harder to doubt the Bearcats (4-0). With 400 power ranking points so far, Tim Hibbs' team looks like a YAIAA Division I contender.

T-6. South Western -- The Mustangs (4-0) are one of only four unbeaten AAAA schools in the district, but they're also looking for their first win against a AAAA side.

12. Spring Grove -- A 3-1 record looks good, but the Rockets were overmatched in their first game against a AAAA school in a 28-0 loss to Central on Friday.

T-13. Central York -- The Panthers (2-2) have rebounded well from their pair of defeats to start the season.

Dallastown (2-2) is in a tie for 17th place, 20 points back of the top 16.

Class AAA (Top 16 make playoffs)

T-1. West York -- The Bulldogs (4-0) emerged from Week 4 tied with Manheim Central with 490 power points, thanks mostly to a brutal early season schedule that included games against AAAA teams Central York, Dallastown and Red Lion.

9. New Oxford -- Wins against AAAA schools Waynesboro and York Tech have propelled the Ox (3-1) into the Top 10. Another tough matchup looms against Central York this Friday.

T-11. Northeastern -- In just their second season of existence, the Bobcats (3-1) sit tied with Hershey and Susquenita. But with a punishing stretch of games coming up (York Suburban, at West York, at Kennard-Dale, Littlestown), staying in the top 16 might be a challenge.

16. Kennard-Dale -- The Rams have won two in a row, and at 270 power points have just enough to sneak in the top 16, for now.

Also, worth noting that Mid-Penn Capital league side Northern York (4-0) ranked sixth in the Class AAA rankings.

Class AA (Top 8 make playoffs)

4. Delone Catholic -- The first in a trio of YAIAA teams in the top 8. The Squires (3-1) only loss this year came to Trinity, which is ranked third in District 3 Class AA.

5. York Suburban -- The Trojans have rebounded well from a season-opening loss to Dallastown. They scored a critical victory against Littlestown on Saturday.

6. Littlestown -- Speaking of the Bolts, their 3-1 record looks good. But the three teams they beat are a combined 0-11.

Bermudian Springs (2-2) sits in ninth, 30 points back of eighth-place Wyomissing.

Class A (Top 8 make playoffs)

4. York Catholic -- The Irish (2-2) leapfrogged three teams in this week's standings thanks to their 25-22 win against York County Tech on Saturday.
