Grenewalt still waiting for decision

Suspended Red Lion athletic director Katy Grenewalt said Wednesday night she still has received "no update" from the school board on her status, four weeks after her dismissal hearings concluded.

The Red Lion school board will meet Thursday night for the second time since those hearings ended, but Grenewalt said no announcement regarding her future was on the agenda for the meeting.

"I know at times they can add things at the last minute," Grenewalt said. "At the time it's not on the agenda and I don't foresee it."

Grenewalt said she and her attorney, Rick Poulson, have still yet to receive a hard copy of the transcript from the dismissal hearing. That transcript needed to be produced and reviewed by the board before a decision could be reached, because some board members were absent from the final hearing. Red Lion superintendent Frank Herron has repeatedly denied comment throughout the process, citing district personnel policy.

Grenewalt said she hoped to have a resolution in the case soon.

"I'm very disappointed because I feel it's really affecting the coaches and the kids in the community," she said of the process being drawn out.

For those who haven't followed this story, Grenewalt has been suspended without pay since May 21, largely because of a roster mix-up that cost the Red Lion boys' basketball team nine games and a playoff spot. A Lions' freshman played for both the freshman team and the varsity team -- a no-no under PIAA rules.

Thursday's school board meeting is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Red Lion Education Center.

Update:

(Thursday, 9:39 p.m.) Just got back from the board meeting, and still no public update on Grenewalt's status.

Though I will pass along this note: The board approved the appointment of Ben Smith and Mick Blanteno as co-head coaches for the girls' soccer team. Smith coached the team last year, while Blanteno is the Lions boys' soccer coach.
