Solanco's Bo Spiller talks about 100th win and Beast of the East title

Usually one milestone is enough to hold someone for a weekend. For Solanco heavyweight Bo Spiller however, last weekend’s Beast of the East Tournament in Delaware was a prime opportunity to add to his wrestling legacy.

The Solanco senior secured his 100th career win in the quarterfinals against Matt Carrick of Perry (Ohio) with an 8-2 decision.

“At the beginning of the year, I knew it could happen but I really didn’t think about it until that match. I talked about it a little bit but I wasn’t getting nervous over it or anything like that.”

After taking down Daniel Herman of The Heights School (MD), 10-1, Spiller then claimed the Beast of the East title with an 11-2 major decision over Saul Wilkins of GAR Memorial.

Spiller took sixth in 220-pound division last year but set his sights higher for 2014.

“My attitude was to just go in there and dominate every match and put as many points on the board as possible,” Spiller said. “I wanted to do the best that I could and just dominate.”

With 100 wins under his belt, Spiller admitted that the feat didn’t seem possible four years ago as a freshman.

“As a freshman, I talked about how cool it would be but I never imagined what it’d feel like to get there and win that match,” Spiller said. “I talked about it but I wasn’t too serious but once I got there, it was just amazing.”

Spiller, who will wrestle at Bloomsburg next year, is now one of fifteen Solanco wrestlers with 100 career wins.

“It’s unbelievable. There’s a long line of great Solanco wrestlers, who are also great people and it’s just an honor to be in the same category as them.”

With two new milestones achieved, Spiller is taking the same approach to the rest of the wrestling season that he took with the Beast of the East Tournament as he tried to improve of a fourth place finished in states in 2013-14.

“My first year, I wanted to make it to states. Once I got there, I wanted to podium. Now all I want to do is go out there and win it all.”
