What the world was like the last time Wilson lost a section game

Random question: What were you doing in October of 2007?

Me, personally?

I was a bright-eyed sophomore at Clarion University, trying to find my way in this crazy world.

If you can gauge where you were back then, I want you to now try to picture yourself on October 26, 2007.

On that Friday night, Manheim Township defeated Wilson by a score of 26-7 to improve to 8-1.

Why is this significant, you may ask?

Well, it was the last time Wilson lost a Section One game in the L-L.

With an active section winning streak of 45 games, the Bulldogs are continuing a seven-year run that has involved hundreds of players.

I’d like to take a trip back however; to the time of Wilson’s last section loss and explore what the world was like.

Let’s start with the current starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, Jake Templin, who was just ten years old when the Bulldogs lost to Manheim Township.

“I was playing football for my dad at the mite level,” Templin said. “I was in fifth grade and my favorite song was ‘Snow’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

Speaking of 2007 music, Bruce Springstein’s “Magic” was atop the Billboard 200 list the last time the Bulldogs tasted defeat in Section One while Josh Groban’s “Noel” was on its way to becoming the best-selling album of the entire year.

For you smartphone aficionados out there, it was much more difficult to check on the score of the game unless you were there.

Twitter was in its infancy and people weren’t sure how to use that wacky, first generation iPhone.

Here are some other things that were going on the last time Wilson lost a section game:

-The Departed was the no. 1 movie at the box office

-American Idol was the highest rated show on television

-The national average price for gas was around $2.76 per gallon

-The Boston Red Sox were in the middle of sweeping the Colorado Rockies in the ’07 World Series

-The New England Patriots were 7-0 and on their way to a perfect 16-0 regular season

-The Pittsburgh Pirates just wrapped up a 68-94 season and sported Zach Duke as their ace.

Getting back to the current team; Wilson senior Austin Rosa explained how he, like Templin, was playing football as a ten-year-old in 2007.

“The whole community revolves around the sports so that was a lot of people's favorite activity,” he said.

Both Templin and Rosa admitted that being the current torch carriers of the streak does add some pressure but also brings on further inspiration.

“There is some added pressure because a lot of people still keep track of the streak and how we are doing but it just gives us more motivation,” Templin said.

“Our goal every week is to win but yes, extra pressure comes from not only the coaches and players, but from friends and others in the community,” Rosa said. “As for being part of it, it's an extraordinary feeling to be part of something like this but everybody knows they don't want to be the team to end it.”

The Bulldogs will look to increase the streak to 46 games this Friday when they host Hempfield.
