Volleyball Roundup: Hempfield loses heartbreaker in state semis

Hempfield’s quest for a boys’ volleyball state title was cut short on Tuesday after falling to North Allegheny in five games (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 14-25, 10-15) in the Class AAA PIAA semifinals.

It looked as though the Knights were heading to finals after taking the first two games but North Allegheny rallied to pull the unlikely comeback.

“Three players were outstanding; Outside Chris Booth, middle Cole Rineer and defensive specialist Nick Oleksa,” Hempfield coach Mike Vogel said in an email on Wedensday. “We had our chance to win in three but NA prevailed.”

Booth had 24 of Hempfield’s 50 total kills while Ben Naumann contributed 18.

Naumann also tallied 12 digs and Colton Frey led the team with 14. Setter Sam Prescott registed 45 assists in the match.

North Allegheny will now travel to State College to take on Central York at the PSU Rec Hall on Saturday at 1pm.
