Remembering the "high school" factor of high school sports

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the “high school” aspect of high school sports.

Throughout this week so far, the subject has come up about overcoming emotional highs and lows in the District 3 baseball/softball playoffs.

No. 1 Hempfield (AAAA) was upset by no. 16 J.P. McCaskey on Monday evening by a score of 13-3. Just days before, the Black Knights lost 9-6 to Lancaster Catholic in the L-L finals. While the Black Knights may have taken their emotional low into districts, the no. 4 Crusaders may have been flying too high after clinching their first league title and fell 9-6 to no. 13 Greencastle-Antrim in the first round of the AAA districts.

I’m in no way trying to take anything away from the winning teams, but there’s so much more going on in the high school sports mindset than on any other level.

A few coaches hinted on that in their post-game interviews this week.
