Spencer Meyers set to make early comeback

Just six weeks to the day after breaking his arm in two places during football season, Greencastle-Antrim senior Spencer Meyers received some good, if surprising, news.

Meyers was projected to be able to join the Blue Devils' boys basketball team in late December or even January, at the earliest. But he has been cleared by doctors. Meyers started practicing Saturday and will be allowed to play Tuesday when the Blue Devils face off against James Buchanan.

"It was a very pleasant surprise," Greencastle coach Gary Martin said. "It must be nice to be 18 years old and heal up so nice and quickly. I'm very pleased he'll be suiting up and very happy with the way things are shaping up for us."

Meyers was an integral part of the Blue Devils' success last year. He finished with 5.3 points per game, and was a big inside presence for a team without a lot of height. He measures in at 6-foot-5, matching the tallest player on the team. Despite a broken arm to start the season, Meyers was voted as one of the team's captains.

Meyers also served as Greencastle's starting quarterback this year until his injury in Week 9. He was one of the best QBs in Franklin County and finished as the county's most accurate passer. He was selected to the Mid Penn Conference's Colonial Division and the Public Opinion First Teams.

But just because he's had recent success doesn't mean it'll be easy to make a comeback.

"He's been on our bench every game, rides with the team and cheers the team on," Martin said. "He's provided some real good camaraderie. He'll play according to how he feels. We'll just have to see how long it takes for him to get in basketball shape. He's coming off the football field, but we're glad to have him back."
