Baseball district rankings: Delone Catholic, Biglerville and Spring Grove move up

The second set of preliminary PIAA District 3 baseball power rankings were released on Tuesday, and there was a lot of movement involving Hanover-Adams area teams. Power ratings are determined by a formula that factors each team’s winning percentage and their opponent’s winning percentage.

Class AA - top 10 teams qualify for postseason

In: Delone Catholic (10-7, fifth out of 19 teams, .5435 rating), Biglerville (8-8, ninth, .4829)

The biggest winner of the past week is Biglerville, who won three games to get to .500 and move into the top 10. Delone Catholic moved up as well, with a win against York Catholic (now seventh) offsetting two losses.

Out: Fairfield (4-9-1, 14th, .3857), Hanover (1-13, 19th, .2715)

Fairfield beat Delone Catholic on Monday and, if the past week is any indication, a winning streak could boost the Green Knights into the top 10.

Class AAA – top 16 teams qualify for postseason

In: Spring Grove (12-4, fourth out of 37 teams, .7223 rating)

The Rockets continue to impress, beating Waynesboro and Dallastown this week, and moved up into the top four. It's very difficult to see Spring Grove missing out at this point.

Out: Littlestown (9-5, 24th, .5636), Gettysburg (7-7, 25th, .5335), Bermudian Springs (8-9, 31st, .4967)

After splitting a doubleheader on Monday, Littlestown coach Todd Gantz and Gettysburg coach Ryan Brady both said they thought their teams could qualify for districts by winning out. It seems that they would need some help too, as they'll have to pass nine or 10 ten teams along the way.

Class AAAA - top 16 teams qualify for postseason

In: none

Out: New Oxford (7-10, 25th out of 35, .5145 rating), South Western (5-11, 26th, .5071)

The Colonials and Mustangs both only won one game this week, missing an ample opportunity to make up some ground in the power rankings. Given the weak strength of YAIAA Division I outside of Spring Grove, a late winning streak by either or both of these teams might not be enough to qualify for the postseason.
