Who won 2014?
It's the last day of the year, so we look back and ask a simple question: Who won 2014?
Which school in the Hanover-Adams area won the most games across all sports in 2014?
We counted up all of the wins from the spring 2014 and fall 2014 seasons. We've also included the wins racked up so far in winter sports.
The results were surprising and the margin of victory was as close as you can get.
And the crown for winning 2014 goes to......
(Drum roll, please...)
Delone Catholic!
1. Squires/Squirettes (130 wins) -- Despite not competing in as many sports as some of the other competitors, Delone Catholic notched 130 total wins in 2014, more than any other school in the Hanover-Adams area. In softball, the Squirettes finished the season 18-5 and earned a trip to states, where they won their first game. The volleyball team dominated division III again and won the YAIAA title for the third time in four years.
The Squirettes fell short of making it three straight district titles and defending their state title from 2013, but finished the season with a remarkable 20-3 record. On the gridiron, the Squires fought through injuries and made a run to districts late in the season, but succumbed to Camp Hill in the first round.
2. South Western (129 wins) -- So, so close. After dominating the spring sports, the Mustangs fell down the stretch. Softball, girls' lacrosse and boys' tennis each reached double-figures in wins and the boys' track and field team added a division title. But, the Mustangs are in seventh in winter sports wins, so far.
3. Bermudian Springs (116 wins) -- The Eagles' football team finished the regular
season undefeated, 10-0, before falling in the district semifinals. In girls' volleyball, the Eagles finished 16-4 and won a district playoff game over division-rival, Hanover.
4. Gettysburg (114 wins) -- The football team finished 8-3, but fell in the first round o
f districts. The field hockey team (19-2) and boys' soccer team (17-6) each enjoyed some postseason success in the Warriors' inaugural season in the YAIAA.
5. Spring Grove (112 wins) -- Spring Grove won it’s first baseball league championship by defeating Susquehannock in the spring. In golf, Victoria Ross played five playoff holes before finally falling in the District 3 Class AAA championship. Ross won the YAIAA tournament for the third-consecutive time the week prior and led Spring Grove with a season average of 76.7. The softball team added 10 wins and the boys' hoops team is in second place in the division.
6. New Oxford (103 wins) -- New Oxford cross country runner Aaron Gebhart put together a dominating season. He won the YAIAA championships by nearly 25 seconds and earned the District 3 Class AAA title as well. The boys' tennis team adding 13 wins and the baseball team earning 10 more in the spring helped catapult the Colonials a little higher up the rankings as well.
7. Biglerville (81 wins) -- Biglerville’s Rebecca Isaac sits seven points
away from joining the 1,000 point club in basketball and the football team bounced back from a 1-9 season in 2013 to reach districts in 2014.
8. Littlestown (71 wins) --The Bolts had a rough year in football, but the wrestling team is off to a hot start with seven wins. The softball and baseball teams each chipped in with 12 wins apiece.
9. Hanover (67 wins) --Hanover football won more games (2) than it had in the previous two seasons. Dylan Krieger led the league in receptions and receiving yards on the gridiron before returning to the basketball court, where he has Hanover leading division III.
10. Fairfield (53 wins) -- While the football team fell just short of a district playoff appearance, the girls' soccer team ran off a 16-4 season behind Hannah Logue, who tallied 37 goals.
