Delone Catholic to honor 1974, 1989 Boys' Basketball State Championships


On January 18th, Delone Catholic plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1974 PCIAA Class B boys' basketball championship and the 25th anniversary of the 1989 PIAA Class AA championship.

The teams will be honored during halftime of Delone's contest against Greencastle-Antrim which begins at 7:30 p.m..

According to the press release, Delone's 1973-74 championship team endured a tough schedule and finished the season riding a three-game winning streak that allowed them to qualify for the Pennsylvania Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association Class B playoffs. During their playoff run, they earned a double-overtime victory over Lansdale Catholic and defeated Archbishop Kennedy in the Eastern final. The championship game pitted the Squires against South Side Catholic from Pittsburg. Delone held off a late comeback attempt for a 60-59 win. Delone finished the season 13-12 and holds the honor of playing in the last PCIAA game ever played.

The 1988-89 team was senior heavy. The Squires won a school-record 29 games and went 19-1 in Blue Mountain League play. Their lone loss during the regular season was to Fairfield which they avenged in the BML championship game. Delone went on a five-game winning streak which included two overtime wins to earn the schools first PIAA team title in any sport by defeating Brentwood 68-61.

As of now 11 players and two coaches will be on hand to represent the 1988-1989 team and two players and two coaches will represent the 1973-74 team.
