A look ahead: January 3-5


The 2014 sports schedule starts off with a bang this weekend. There are a full slate of games Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Here is what to watch for:

THURSDAY

The pool and the mats are where its at on Thursday as there are several big match ups.

Swimming

York Suburban at Central York at 4:30 pm - The Central York boys and girls teams are undefeated to start the 2013-2014 season and York Suburban is a perennial powerhouse. It is always fun to see these two teams square off against each other.

Wrestling

Hanover at Bermudian Springs at 7:00 pm- Despite their slow start (1-2), Hanover has a very solid wrestling program and boasts several top wrestlers in the area including Ian Brown (9-0) and Tyler Shafer (8-0).

Bermudian Springs is loaded and sits at 8-1. The Eagles have two undefeated wrestlers of their own in Colton Dull (12-0) and Tristan Sponseller (12-0)

FRIDAY

Girls basketball

Dallastown at West York at 7:30 pm- In a battle of the top two teams in the YAIAA Division I, the Bulldogs of West York host Dallastown.

West York is currently 6-2 overall and 4-0 inside the division. Dallastown is 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the division. A Bulldog win would give West York a two-game lead over Dallastown in division play.

Kennard-Dale at Eastern York at 7:30 pm- Kennard-Dale has a big weekend of games, with both on the road. It starts at Eastern York in a battle between the top two teams in YAIAA Division III play.  Kennard-Dale is 4-1 in division play and Eastern York is 2-1. Eastern York is led by Morgan Thomas and her 16.6 points per game and Kennard-Dale’s Katelyn Trott leads the way with 13.8 points per game

SATURDAY

Boys’ basketball

Delone Catholic at South Western at 7:30 pm- In a cross-town matchup, Delone Catholic and South Western square off in their yearly battle. It will be a matchup of two of top sophomores in the YAIAA in Delone’s Devon Moore and South Western’s Brock Geiman.

Moore is averaging 17.5 points per game as the Squires are currently 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the YAIAA Division IV play. Geiman averages 16.0 p.p.g for the Mustangs as they currently sit at 4-5 overall and 3-2 in YAIAA Division play.

In addition to Moore and Geiman, several other underclassmen will be on display in this game. South Western’s Noah Staub and Delone Catholic’s Jake Wiles are also off to fast starts this season

Harrisburg at William Penn at 7:30 pm- In a matchup of 6-2 teams, William Penn tries to keep their winning streak alive. After suffering two straight losses, William Penn has won two straight including a last second win against McCaskey in overtime. It was the second time this season that Trey Shifflett has hit a game winner.

Girls’ basketball

Kennard-Dale at Susquehannock at 1 pm - Two of the top teams in the YAIAA square off Saturday in a game that pits two top-15 scorers against each other.

Susquehannock’s Shannon Druck is average 15.8 points per game and Kennard-Dale’s Trott is averaging 13.8.

Kennard-Dale is 5-5 on the season and 4-1 in the YAIAA Division III. Susquehannock is 8-2 and 4-1 in YAIAA Division II
