13 YAIAA teams still in play for state titles
Even though graduation and finals have come and gone for several schools, the spring sports season continues to chug along.
The YAIAA still has 13 teams in the mix for state titles, including five York-area teams facing off in quarterfinal action Saturday.
Here's a look at the local teams still playing in state tournaments:
Girls' lacrosse
Quarterfinals
Class 2A
Susquehannock vs. Hershey
4 p.m. Saturday at Cumberland Valley HS
These two last met in a district semifinal, with the Warriors pushing aside the Trojans, 18-10. District 3 teams could finally challenge District 1 on the state stage with three central Pennsylvania programs advancing to the second round of the 2A tournament this season.
Kennard-Dale vs. Oakland Catholic
4 p.m. Saturday at State College HS
The Rams look to earn a rematch against YAIAA foe Susquehannock in a state semifinal, but first they must knock off the WPIAL runner-up.
Boys' volleyball
Quarterfinals
Class 3A
Central York vs. Pennsbury
7 p.m. Saturday at Schuylkill Valley HS
The No. 1-ranked team in the state, the Panthers dispatched the District 1 third-place team in the first round of the PIAA tournament. Now they face off against the District 1 runner-up.
Class 2A
Northeastern vs. Dock Mennonite
5 p.m. Saturday at Schuylkill Valley HS
The District 1 champion, Dock Mennonite used a first-round sweep to advance to the quarters. Northeastern is ranked No. 1 in 2A; Dock Mennonite is ranked No. 10.
York Suburban vs. Beaver County Christian
3 p.m. Saturday at Claysburg-Kimmel HS
The WPIAL champions, Beaver County Christian is ranked No. 2 in the state. York Suburban is ranked No. 3.
Baseball
First round
Class 6A
Dallastown vs. Hatboro-Horsham
4 p.m. Monday at Red Lion HS
The YAIAA and District 3 champions face the District 1 fifth-place finisher. Hatboro-Horsham was eliminated from the District 1 bracket in a 2-1 game, but it bounced back in consolation play to reach the state tournament.
Class 4A
Kennard-Dale vs. Forest Hills
5 p.m. Monday at Iron Horse Complex, Windber
The District 3 runner-up will play in the west side of the bracket, taking on the District 5/6 champion.
West York vs. Bonner/Prendergast
1 p.m. Monday at La Salle College HS
The Bulldogs needed to win a consolation to punch their ticket to the PIAA tournament. West York faces the District 12 (Philadelphia) champion.
Softball
First round
Class 6A
Central York vs. Hempfield Area (District 7)
4 p.m. Monday at California University
The Panthers played Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but managed to win a consolation game to keep their season going. It doesn't get any easier with a first-round matchup against WPIAL champion Hempfield Area on the horizon.
Class 5A
Spring Grove vs. Bishop Shanahan
2 p.m. Monday at Messiah College
Bishop Shanahan is the third-place team out of District 1. A Spring Grove win could lead to a potential rematch with District 3 foe Lampeter-Strasburg in a state quarterfinal.
Class 4A
Kennard-Dale vs. Esperanza Academy
3:30 p.m. Monday at York College
The Rams face off against the Philadelphia runner-up in opening-round action. Eastern and Kennard-Dale are on opposite sides of the brackets, so the District 3 finalists can only meet again in the state championship.
Eastern York vs. Bonner/Prendergast
2 p.m. Monday at Arcadia University
The Knights hit the road for a game against the Philly champions. Bonner Prendergast defeated Esperanza Academy 14-0 in the championship behind a seven-strikeout performance by Molly McNulty.
Class 2A
Fairfield vs. Windber
1 p.m. Monday at Everett HS
The Green Knights' opponent is the champion of the District 5/8 region. Windber earned the right to advance to the PIAA tournament with a 13-0 win against Conemaugh Township.
