Biglerville coach Nelson earns 100th victory

Jebb Nelson started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Biglerville in 2003, and he served in that capacity for seven years. When Rob Moore resigned as head coach following the Canners' district title in 2009, Nelson was tabbed as his replacement.

In his six-plus years on the job, Nelson has led his alma mater to three YAIAA Division III titles, one district title and two state playoff appearances. On Thursday, with Biglerville defeating Delone Catholic, 8-0, Nelson has now won 100 matches as the Canners' boys' soccer head coach.

His career record stands at 100-39-5.

"The guys and their families have bought into the program and the system that we try to run," Nelson said. "I've been fortunate to have all the talent that I've had here and that those guys have all worked hard. It's definitely a family atmosphere."

Biglerville (5-0-1, 4-0 YAIAA III) wasted little time in grabbing the lead as Antonio Salazar scored just 82 seconds into the match off an assist from Ezequiel Linares. Jared Dotson-Jones added a penalty kick score just over five minutes later.

"We talked about starting quick tonight," Canners co-captain Conner Griest said. "We wanted to get a couple goals early and take control."

Delone (2-2, 2-2) kept the hosts off the board for the next 24 minutes before Carlos Castillo scored off a helper from Elijah Garcia at the 10:24 mark of the first half.

In the second half, Griest scored twice and assisted Lazaro Salazer on another goal, while Garcia and Danny Chavarria each scored to finalize the scoring.

"We were focused tonight," Nelson said. "I reminded the guys not to be overconfident and look past these guys, and they did a good job of coming ready to play."

Griest added, "We were a little slow getting started last week, but we've stepped it up since then."

Next up for the Canners is a showdown with York Catholic at 10 a.m. Saturday. York Catholic lost, 1-0, to Bermudian Springs in double overtime Thursday.

The Canners have won their last two matches by a combined 16-0 count. Also defeating Littlestown, 8-0, on Tuesday.

Biglerville scored on all eight of its shots on goal in the match and held an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and a 5-0 advantage in corners.

"We can now focus on York Catholic, since they're the next team on the schedule," Nelson said. "I feel that if we play how we've been playing this week that it'll be a fun match."
