Chambersburg's Nick Cover claims 4th place in District 3 championships

SHILLINGTON >> The goal has been met.

Chambersburg freshman Nick Cover competed in the District 3 Class AAA boys diving championships Monday night at Governor Mifflin and placed fourth, which earned him a berth in the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University on March 14.

"Getting to states was my goal this year," said Cover, "and now I have more than two weeks to get ready for it. I'll be working on getting higher (on his takeoffs) and on my entries."

Cover scored 442 points total for his 11 dives, which was only 3.65 points away from third-place finisher John Warker of Wilson. Joe Warker of Wilson won the crown with a score of 502.30, followed by Jake Hedrick of Hershey (470.10).

Cover said, "I expected to be somewhere around fourth place, judging by the scores I had seen and comparing them to my points on certain dives."

Trojan diving coach Ryan Crider said, "Nick did an awesome job tonight. He kept pushing his way through and it was one of his best 11-dive meets ever."

After the preliminary round, Cover sat in fifth place, then moved up to fourth. He was closing in on third before the meet was over.

Cover's highest score (50.4) came on a front 2 1/2 somersault, and he also scored well on a reverse dive (22.5).

"His reverses were spot on tonight," Crider said. "His reverse 1 1/2 somersault was good, too."

"I've been working hard on the reverses and I did them well tonight," Cover said. "I've been practicing a lot."

Shippensburg's Jared Keim placed 12th with 216.65 points.
