BOYS BASKETBALL: Shalom Christian can't hold lead in MDCC tourney loss to Grace Academy

HAGERSTOWN, MD. >> Despite getting off to a great start Tuesday night, Shalom Christian's boys basketball team couldn't keep it up.

The Flames led by a nine-point margin after the first quarter, 14-5, but Grace Academy clawed its way back and captured a 53-46 victory in the first-round of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference tournament.

"We ended our season with one of our better games," Shalom coach Danley Shank said. "We competed hard, and we were just not able to maintain the lead into the fourth quarter."

Shalom (8-12) held on to a 37-35 lead heading into the final period, but the Flames went scoreless for more than four minutes midway through the frame. During the dry spell, the Knights reeled off 10 straight points to ensure the victory.

"We had to play a little bit more conservatively because of foul trouble, and as an effect we did not execute as well offensively," Shank said. "It was a tough game, and one we badly wanted to win for Hunter Martin and Sasha Martin, our seniors."

Jonah Stains was the Flames' offensive leader with 12 points, and Cameron Roseman contributed nine points and six rebounds. Micha Lehman finished with eight points, five boards and two steals.

HERITAGE ACADEMY 53, CV CHRISTIAN 40 >> Cumberland Valley Christian had a strong start and led by a point at halftime, but couldn't hang on in the first round of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference tournament.

The Blazers jumped out to a 9-5 lead after the first frame and remained ahead 23-22 at the break, but Heritage Academy finally hit its stride. The Eagles took advantage of some shooting struggles on the part of CVC and secured the victory.

"We played well in the first half and were right there with them," Blazer coach Mike Sanders said. "Our strategy was working well, but in the second half, their offense regrouped and we seemed to settle for too many threes outside."

The Blazers (5-19) finished the game with four 3-pointers, all of which came in the first half.

"We needed to take the ball to the basket more because we weren't as hot in the second half as we were in the beginning," Sanders said. "But the boys played well, and they took a step forward with the defense, and it's something we can continue to build on."

Jeremiah Graves had a strong game for CVC, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Conner Chapman and Aaron McBeth both contributed eight points, while Jesus Pena dished out three assists.

Despite being double-teamed for most of the game, Nate Patey racked up 26 points for Heritage.
