Potential marquee matchups await York/Adams wrestlers at sectional tournaments

With the conclusion of the team wrestling season, the focus now shifts to the individual postseason, which starts Saturday with the sectional tournaments.

York/Adams teams will head to two destinations: Class AA teams will travel north to Susquenita where six wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the District 3 tournament. The Class AAA teams will compete at South Western where at least three wrestlers from each weight class will qualify for the District 3 tournament.

Here are some potential marquee matches:

Class AA

120-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> Bermudian Springs' Austin Clabaugh (31-2) and Hanover's Caleb Garland (28-3) are the top two seeds and look to be on course for a championship clash. Clabaugh is a returning Southeast regional qualifier, while Garland qualified for the PIAA tournament last year.

138-POUND SEMIFINALS >> Bermudian Springs' Ashton West (28-6) and Biglerville's Scott Cooper (1-0) could meet on the bottom half of the bracket, while Boiling Springs' Kyle Shoop (31-1) and Littlestown's Ian McClure (20-7) look to meet in the top half. Cooper is coming off of a foot injury in football season and is a returning PIAA qualifier. Shoop finished second in the state last year, losing to Hanover's Ian Brown in the final.

145-POUND QUARTERFINAL >> Delone Catholic's Brian Shermeyer (26-8) and Boiling Springs' AJ Kostyak (25-9) will meet each other in one of the deepest weights. Newport's Colby Stroup (22-2), Upper Dauphin's Jackson Kennerly (24-5), Biglerville's Nate Newberry (25-2, 94 career wins) and Camp Hill's Alex Gallaher (21-4) are all in the weight class.

195-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> Eastern York's Lucas Barshinger (22-0) and Littlestown's Matt Guilday (29-1) are the top two seeds and appear on a collision course for an entertaining final. Boiling Springs' Nate Gouhin (17-10) and Bermudian's Logan Luckenbaugh (6-4) could crash the party.

220-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> Bermudian's Sam McCollum (29-0) and Halifax's Jakob Paul (26-2) are the top two seeds and should meet in the final. McCollum enters the postseason with 90 career wins.

Class AAA

106-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> Spring Grove's Dalton Rohrbaugh (25-3) and Red Lion's Jacob Frock (26-3) should meet in the final. The last time these two met in January, their bout went to overtime.

126-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> South Western's Owen Wherley (31-4, 96 wins) is the top seed and a returning PIAA qualifier. He could meet Kennard-Dale's Mike Bracey (25-0), also a returning PIAA qualifier, in the final. This could be the best championship match at any sectional tournament in District 3. York Suburban's Dustin Knaub (27-3) could spring an upset.

138-POUND CHAMPIONSHIP >> Central York's two-time PIAA qualifier Dylan Chatterton (25-0) could meet Susquehannock's Colin Riley (24-1) in the final. Riley has been the best wrestler for a much-improved Susquehannock team, with his only loss coming back in December.

160-POUND SEMIFINALS >> Spring Grove's Marcus Kehr (28-4) drew the top seed and could face West York's Ryan Narber (25-5) in one semifinal, while Kennard-Dale's Nathan Stewart (25-3) could face New Oxford's Nolan Poust (26-5) in the other semifinal. A pair of great matches, the winners being well-prepared for each other in the championship.

285-POUND SEMIFINAL >> Gettysburg's Giovani Alvarado (28-4) could face New Oxford's Brock Hartman (25-5) in a semifinal. The two met earlier this season with Alvarado pinning Hartman. The winner will likely face top-seeded Jared Schell (25-3) of Red Lion. Schell downed Hartman, 5-2, earlier this season.
