H.S. EXTRA NOTEBOOK: Area swimmers prep for Mid Penn Conference Championships
It's that time of the year again, when all the area swimmers head to compete with the best of the conference in the Mid Penn Conference Championships.
The championships are Friday and Saturday, hosted by Cumberland Valley, and all of Franklin County's schools are sending at least one representative.
Probably the swimmer with the highest expectations is Chambersburg's Abby Stauffer, who is seeded first in the 200 IM and second in the 500 freestyle. The Lady Trojans also had a pair of strong relay teams; the 200 medley is seeded fifth and they are sixth in the 200 free relay.
For Chambersburg's boys team, Chandler Desotelle enters the 200 freestyle in sixth and ninth in the 500 free.
Shippensburg's Maggie Morehouse should also put up a nice fight in a pair of events. She's seeded seventh in the 200 free, just ahead of Chambersburg's Lauren Ellis, and eighth in the 500 free.
The area should see some good competition in the girls 100, where Ellis is seeded seventh and Waynesboro's Claire Koons is eighth.
James Buchanan's highest seeded entry is Clay Murray, who is at 17th in the 50 free. Competing for Greencastle-Antirm will be Megan Beam, who enters the 50 free in 26th.
Friday's events begin at 5 p.m., and Saturday's begin at 10:55 a.m. The full schedule of events and seed times can be found on midpennchamp.com.
SPRAGUE SUFFERS INJURY >> Just a few weeks ago, Greencastle-Antrim junior Sam Sprague started to come on very strong for the boys basketball team.
He then suffered a devastating injury in a game against Northeastern, and the injury got even more devastating when Sprague found out just how bad it was.
He tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus, keeping him off the basketball court for the rest of the season, and, even worse, he may miss his senior football season as well.
Sprague was averaging just under 10 points per game this season, but had caught fire just before the injury. He averaged 5.75 ppg in the first eight games of the year, but surged to 16.8 ppg over the next six contests.
Even more impressive may have been his football stats. Sprague finished 2014 with 442 rushing yards, 181 receiving yards and eight total touchdowns. He pulled down one interception and was a P.O. second-team All Star.
