EMMAUS — The Gwynedd Mercy field hockey team scored first Tuesday night, as senior captain Cassie O'Brien directed a great pass into the box that freshman Haley Durkin was able to put away.

The Monarchs had a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the PIAA Class AA State Semifinal, but after that, Wyoming Seminary did all of the scoring, earning a 3-1 victory on a cold night on the turf at Emmaus High School's Memorial Field.

The win advances the Blue Knights to Saturday's state final to face Crestwood, which defeated Oley Valley 2-1 in double overtime in the other semifinal matchup. The championship game gets under way at 12 noon at the Zephyr Sports Complex in Whitehall.

GMA's tremendous season came to an end with 22 wins and four losses. The Monarchs came up just one win short of their first trip to the finals since 1996.

O'Brien set up Durkin for a 1-0 GMA lead with 20:30 left in the first half.

But Wyoming Seminary came right back.

The Blue Knights tied it just two minutes later when Morgan Malone kept hammering away to knock in a rebound, and then only 21 seconds later, Alexis Quick drilled a long shot on goal that Gabby Grossman was able to chip in for a 2-1 Wyoming lead.

The two teams went to halftime having each put five shots on goal.

Grossman scored again on a penalty stroke with 21:28 left, giving the Blue Knights all the cushion they would need.
