NEWTOWN TWP. — The Christopher Dock girls soccer team captured the District One Class A title in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, as Bailey Kratz scored with 8 minutes and 10 seconds left in the first overtime for a 3-2 win over Delaware County Christian.
The victory secured the Pioneers' third consecutive district title and sends them to the PIAA Class A Tournament, where they face the District 12 champion Tuesday in the opening round.
Kratz scored the game winner on a breakaway. Goalie Jamie Barr came out to try to cut the play off, but Kratz was able to knock the ball past her and a diving Delco defender got a foot on it but could not stop the ball from rolling past the goal line and into the net.
It was Kratz's second score of the night.
"The first half was great and the second half was a little rough but going into overtime, we knew what we needed to get done,' she said.
Christopher Dock had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Kratz scored unassisted, drilling one in from about 15 yards out, putting the top-seeded Pioneers in front a little more than 18 minutes into the contest.
Just three minutes later, Mattasyn Shisler, another fleet-footed Dock junior, went upper middle, beating Barr for a 2-0 Dock advantage.
But the Knights would make it a one-goal game before halftime.
Alex Thompson's hustle allowed her to get to a ball about 30 yards out, and she was able to boot a high shot that sailed just over the outstretched hands of a leaping Emily Gordon, cutting the Pioneer lead to 2-1 with six minutes left to go in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half, second-seeded Delco Christian tied things up.
Kailey Neef sent a ball forward to Julia Kyne in traffic, and Kyne was able to get her foot on it and lift it over Gordon for the equalizer.
The two teams battled the rest of the way, with chances at both ends, until Kratz knocked in the game winner and sent Dock to states.
"In overtime, we came alive,' said Pioneers coach Ray Hess, whose team went 3-0 against Delco this season. "We had our two breakaways and Bailey could have won it on the first one. (On the second one), she got around the keeper twice, and that's composure, rather than just kicking it in there.'
The goal provided instant bliss for the Pioneers, heartbreak for the Knights (12-8).
"They have a lot of really, really good players,' Delco Christian coach Bill Neef said of Dock. "There's a spirited competition between these two schools and we were here to win. It was a good game. Tough one.'
