BOYERTOWN — In a wild, back-and-forth battle of size versus speed, size eventually prevailed as Boyertown defeated Pottstown on Friday night at Memorial Stadium, 49-34.
Griffin Pasik threw for 192 yards, including seven completions and two touchdowns to Nick Brough, and Cody Richmond ran for 130 yards for the Bears (3-2, 4-2). Gary Wise passed for 260 yards for the Trojans (0-4, 0-6).
"Their strength is speed and it's our weakness,' Boyertown coach Mark Scisly said after his team racked up 529 total yards while allowing 385. "Their weakness is the front and it's our strength. Hats off to them. For an 0-5 team, they came to play.'
"Give them credit,' Trojan coach Don Grinstead said concerning the Bears. "They're a big, strong, physical team. They run their offense really well.'
Last year Pottstown defeated the Bears by a 51-47 score and another shootout began right from the opening possessions for each side. The Bears drove 68 yards on 10 plays, the last seven on a run by Richmond, and Pottstown countered with a 60-yard march over seven plays with Wise hitting John Charles (five catches, 71 yards) for a score from 24 yards out.
Then Dayon Mohler showed his speed and athleticism for the Trojans when he cut to the left and then back to the right during a 50-yard touchdown run on the final play of the first quarter and caught a pass from Wise over the middle and broke away from two tacklers during a 53-yard touchdown play midway through the second quarter.
That gave the visitors their largest lead of the night at 20-7. But Boyertown came back with a 79-yard scoring drive, with Richmond running 15 yards into the end zone on his longest carry of the night. Then the Bears recovered an onside kick and Pasik connected with Brough on a 41-yard scoring strike on the next play for a 20-20 tie at the half.
"Nick had a great game,' said Scisly. "Pasik had a great game. It seems like they both got on the same page tonight.'
Boyertown went up by a 26-20 score three minutes into the second half when Richmond ran for six and 11 yards on consecutive plays and Pasik threw 27 yards for a score to Brough. Pottstown came back to lead one last time at 27-26 on a 60-yard toss from Wise to Denzel Harvey.
But it was pretty much all the Bears' offense after that as Pasik finished off three drives with TD runs of one, 40 and two yards. Boyertown showed confidence in its offense by going for, and converting, a pair of 4th-and-1 plays, one from its own 22 yard line early in the third quarter and the other from its own 29 while leading by eight points with four minutes to go.
"Our offense is playing well,' said Scisly. "I didn't want to put their offense back on the field. They were getting big plays.'
That last gamble by the Bears' offense paid off in an 80-yard touchdown drive for a 49-34 advantage with 2:11 to go, before Brough clinched the win with an interception for the only turnover by either team aside from the recovered onside kick.
Pasik wound up 10-for-14 through the air for two touchdowns and scored three on the ground along with a two-point conversion run that gave his team a 34-27 lead.
"He had a great game tonight,' added Scisly. "His passes were right on the money.'
Grinstead was encouraged by his team's performance following a one-sided loss last week.
"I'm really proud of my kids,' he said. "We fixed a lot of mistakes from last week. We have some things to build on. They're tough, resilient kids. I'm proud to be coaching them.'
