MORRISVILLE — If it felt like Lansdale Catholic's Zach Talley towered over the Morrisville lineman it is because he did. The 6-foot-3 senior tight end was too big for the Bulldogs to block and the rest of the Crusaders were too crisp to slow down.
Talley and the Crusaders played the bullies on the block in Morrisville Friday night and wasted little time finding the end zone and staying perfect on the season. The Crusaders 42-6 non-league win was just another snapshot in how far the group has come.
"We are confident, but no over-confident,' Talley said. "We are staying humble, staying in the weight room, and working hard every day. We work as one unit and it is all 11 of us out there.'
Talley blocked a punt attempt to set up the Crusaders (3-0) with excellent field position early in the first quarter. He then brought in the two yard pass from junior quarterback Joe Pinzka and the rout was on. It was the only pass Pinzka had to throw on the evening.
"We had to come out here and do what we do well,' Crusaders coach Tom Kirk said. "This is a senior-laden (team) and they (are) leading well. And winning helps.'
Several ball carriers proved effective on the ground for the Crusaders. Senior Joe Jefferson ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Marlen Fenstermacher finished with 47 yards and Mike Iacono found the end zone in the third quarter. But nobody was more efficient than senior Mike Isabella. On his three carries he ran for two scores and 142 yards.
"You have to go out and play every game like it's your last one,' Isabella said. "I owe everything to the line. They put the holes there, I just read my blocks, and exploded to the end zone.'
Isabella scored from 27 yards out to open the scoring and tagged in the second team offense after his 89 yard run. The Crusaders finished with 342 rushing yards compared to the Bulldogs 122 on the ground. Their leading rusher was Tahmeir Scott with 65 yards. The Bulldogs lone score came on a Joe Sesar 25-yard touchdown pass to Donovan O'Brien.
"Our strength has been our offensive line and our backs playing together,' Kirk said. "We are trying to get better every week with every practice. We don't want to be complacent.'
The Bulldogs fought hard, but did not have the size or the numbers to compete with the Crusaders. Coach Kirk remembers having about two dozen in his first preseason camp, but success has help his numbers rise. Success — which from the looks of it — is just getting started.
"Having a good season last year helped us out tremendously with our roster,' Talley said. "Some of the seniors went out talking to kids, trying to get our name out there.'
"Last year it was easy to get everybody in the game and this year it is not so easy,' Kirk said. "You have to make it something people want to be a part of and we are doing that, but we are still not where we want to be.
