YORK -- In the final round of the PIAA golf championships, Chambersburg sophomore Max Bell experienced something he never had before on a golf course.

A migraine slowly came over him after he started play, disabling his peripheral vision, causing a headache and leading to a nine-over par on the first nine holes.

As Bell's migraine improved on the back nine, so did his play. He shot four-over par on the back nine to finish with an 84 which, combined with his Day 1 score of 83, gave him a 167 and 45th place.

"I was having trouble seeing," Bell said. "Once I could start to see again I had a massive headache. I was kind of out of it for a while."

Bell's struggles were at its worst on his ninth hole, hole No. 18.

After hooking his drive left into a pond, he hit his drop shot short right of the green. He then "chunked" his next two shots, the second going into a bunker. He hit it from the bunker onto the green, where he two-putted for a double-par eight.

Around his 13th hole, hole No. 5, his migraine started to subside.

He shot one-under par on his final three holes with a birdie coming on the second-to-last hole.

On the par-three hole, Bell said he was feeling a rhythm and went for the green on his tee shot.

"I hit a couple good iron shots the holes before that were on line, so I had some confidence," he said.

A bunker lay to the front of the green and a hazard was positioned to the right. His shot landed

on the green and rolled within five feet of the pin.

Though he didn't play as well as he would have liked, Bell sees his experiences at the championships as a building block for future success.

"It shows me what I'm going to have to do and work on," he said. "Obviously I didn't play that well, but I can take a lot away from it and maybe win it in the next two years."
