MECHANICSBURG -- Mallory Cortis shot a career-best 71 Wednesday to help Chambersburg move closer to a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division title in golf.

Cortis shot an even-par round, three strokes than her previous best score, at Rich Valley Golf Club to tie Cumberland Valley's Matt Plummer for medalist honors. The Trojans (28-2) lead CV by three games with two matches left.

"Being up three with two to go, we control our own destiny," Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said. "All we have to do is not finish lower than second."

Cortis posted four birdies in her round, at Nos. 4, 7, 11 and 18, which is the No. 1 handicap hole.

"I hit a really good second shot and kept it below the hole, and made a long putt (on 18)," Cortis said. "I wasn't expecting birdie there. I think the big thing was my ability to come back today -- when I made a bogey I was able to come back with a birdie. I made the putts that I had to make."

Also for Chambersburg, Drew Stonesifer shot 77 to place fifth, Kacy Straub had a 79 to tie for eighth and Nick Stonesifer and Hank Strickler each shot 80 to tie for 10th.

Yost said, "I'm proud of Mallory -- that was an awesome round. She had a 15-to 20-footer on her last hole to be under par. Drew Stonesifer put together a good round, too, with 77."

Liz Breed fired a 75 to place fourth for Waynesboro and Lucas Franki was 10th with an 80. The Indians placed fifth and Shippensburg was sixth.
