SCOTLAND -- Chambersburg kicked off its golf season in style Thursday by topping the field in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match at Chambersburg Country Club.

The Trojans produced a score of 396 strokes to easily finish ahead of Cumberland Valley (419) and Gettysburg (423).

Waynesboro lost a tiebreaker with Carlisle to finish sixth, and Shippensburg finished just one stroke back in seventh.

Chambersburg's Kacy Straub, a senior captain, said, "The course was playing pretty nice. I think it made a difference playing at home because most of the other teams are young and they haven't played other courses except for their own."

Gettysburg's Matt Hardman fired a one-under par 72 to capture medalist honors.

Chambersburg's Nick Stonesifer and Waynesboro's Liz Breed tied for third with 75s and the Trojans' Mallory Cortis was one stroke back with a 76. It was Cortis' best score on the home course.

Stonesifer rolled in a long putt on No. 17 for an eagle to help his score.

Also for Chambersburg, Straub finished tied for seventh with an 80 and Hank Strickler's 81 was good for ninth place.

Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson said, "Liz played well and had most of her tools working. She had just one three-putt green and 34 putts total, which is outstanding on those greens.

"Our scores today reflect the youth of our team. We had five rookies on the course and to play your first varsity match at Chambersburg C.C. is really

difficult."

Waynesboro's next-best scorer was Lucas Franki with a 94. The Indians and Carlisle just managed to finish ahead of Shippensburg, which is still seeking its first-ever Mid Penn win. The Greyhounds' top golfers were Daniel Orseno with a 90 and Mitchell Beattie with 91.
