In fact, the York Catholic junior went undefeated in singles play through the regular season, leading the Division II champion Irish to an unbeaten league season.
Although she lost to younger sister Anna in the YAIAA championship match, the two teamed up to win the doubles' competition then went on to the District 3 Class AA title.
With those accomplishments, Ava earned the York Daily Record/Sunday News Division II Player of the Year honor.
Why tennis? My dad (bought) mom free tennis lesson when I was little and her back was acting up, so she gave lessons to Anna and I to get us started.
Do you play other sports?
Not any more, I don't have time with tennis and school work.
Do you prefer playing outdoors or indoors?
Generally I like to play indoors because I don't have to deal with all the elements. The freezing cold is not one of my favorites.
What gives you a bigger lift, a smashing winner or a finesse spinner down the line?
For me, smashing a winner. I am a more aggressive style player.
Do you have any superstitions on game day?
If I have lost a couple of points in a row with the same ball I will switch balls.
What opponent gave you the most fits on the field?
Probably people who hit with a lot of topspin.
What was your
Winning the district doubles championship with my sister. It was a huge a thrill for us.
If your sport wasn't offered, what sport would you play?
Maybe basketball. I used to play for a couple of years.
What sport are you the absolute worst at?
I am pretty terrible at volleyball. We used to play in gym class; it was never my strong suit.
Who is your role model?
Probably would have to be Roger Federer. He is such an amazing player. You have to love his beautiful stroke. He is so calm on the court. He has a really dignified air and is an ambassador for the sport.
Being a star athlete, you never eat junk food, right?
I am terrible, I love to snack. That is my weakness. With my dad being from Germany, I love German chocolate.
What is your favorite activity off the court?
Shopping. I just love to shop, shoes and everything. Especially when we go to Germany with the styles.
If you had a day all to yourself with no responsibilities, what would you do?
I have no idea. With so much school work, I would like to relax and go to beach.
Are you a clean or messy bedroom person?
My room is pretty clean.
What one thing about you that would surprise people?
I am really shy and that doesn't come across when I am on the court.
What is the one thing you do that drives your mom or dad crazy?
Probably my absolute lack of time management. If I have school work to do I will end up being up past midnight trying to do homework.
