From staff reports
The midstate isn't exactly dealing with weather suitable for outdoor tennis right now.
But girls tennis players from Chambersburg and James Buchanan braved the elements on Monday in the Mid Penn Conference Tournament.
In Class AAA, the Trojans have just one singles player still alive -- Haley Wissinger at No. 3 -- while No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles are still going in playback action.
"Where as Friday it was waiting for the wind, today it was the cold," Chambersburg coach Mike Kolumban said. "It was tough just watching them and being bundled up. Watching the girls go out there and play in this weather made me feel even colder."
Wissinger played just one match Monday and romped over Carlisle's Sara Reapsome, 6-1, 6-0. She will play in the semifinals this morning at Central Dauphin East.
At No. 1 singles, Abby Jacobs lost 6-1, 6-1 to Hershey's Jessica Klinger, but won a playback match to remain alive for an at-large District 3 bid. She will face Susquehanna Township's Christine Evangelista today for that right.
Jacobs and Wissinger lost to top-seeded Northern 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. They will face Gettysburg today in a playback match.
"Despite the No. 1 doubles score, the girls played a pretty good match," Kolumban said. "We just hit the top seed and they knew what to do on the crucial points."
After winning her first match of the day, Teal Nitterhouse had a tough battle with Kelly Jackson of Hershey at No.
But it took Jackson everything she had to fend off a Nitterhouse rally and win 7-5.
Kolumban said, "She was down 5-0, came back to tie it 5-5 and then lost the last two points. That was a heartbreaker. I thought she was going to win after that comeback."
Emily Arnold and Alex Shandera also fell at No. 3 doubles, 7-5, 6-1.
Class AA
James Buchanan's Anna Angle will get a chance to revenge one of only two losses of the season when she faces top-seed Abby Zelko of Bishop McDevitt at No. 2 singles today at 9:30 a.m. at East Pennsboro.
In the earlier match, Zelko won 6-2, 6-1, though JB coach Terri Beegle is confident Angle is up to the task.
"Anna was the third seed last year and lost her first match (at Mid Penns)," Beegle said. "She is ready to take care of business this year."
Angle, the No. 2 seed, played her semifinal match with Lauren Wagner of Trinity on Monday and rolled 6-1, 6-1.
Beegle said, "Anna rolled right through her girls with her serve and backhand slice. It was so bad their girl asked her coach what she should do with it. She has a wicked backhand slice and today it was on."
At No. 2 doubles, Angle and Clare Wilkinson won a third-set tiebreaker against a team from Susquenita to reach the semifinals. But the Rocket duo lost to top-seed Camp Hill 6-3, 6-2.
Beegle said, "Considering the weather, the girls played very well. Anna's serve was on and Clare did a great job at the net. With the wind and the cold, it kind of zapped their energy."
