McCONNELLSBURG -- It was a tale of two halves in the Inter-County Conference championship game between McConnellsburg and West Branch on Saturday.
Both teams scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and neither team scored in the second half. In between those two time frames it was West Branch which found the back of the net, scoring two goals before halftime to win the title, 4-2.
"Both teams wanted it," Spartan coach Toby McGarvey said. "They came out and pounded a goal, then we pounded a couple back. It was a disappointing loss but someone had to win, someone had to lose."
West Branch scored two goals in the opening three minutes. West Branch's midfielders found holes in McConnellsburg's back line and sent through balls to Christi Sabol and Alex Lanager, who raced away from Spartan defenders to score.
The Spartans (13-5) answered with two goals of their own, both from Libby Strayer, to tie the game up before 10 minutes had elapsed.
But only three minutes later Sabol notched her second goal of the game, which ended up being the game winner. West Branch scored its fourth goal on a corner with two minutes left in the half.
In the second half, West Branch went to a defensive formation, sending nine players back on defense to prevent a Spartan comeback.
"We were having a tough time getting any type of ball movement," McGarvey said of playing against the defensive front.
