NEWVILLE - Chambersburg's girls cross country team took first place in Class AAA at Saturday's Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring, while the boys finished third.
The girls, who scored a 108 in the Class AAA race, had three finishers in the top 10 with Courney Group leading the pack in third. She finished in 20:03.03, less than 10 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Chambersburg girls coach Chris Monheim said it was the fastest any Trojan has performed at this course.
"She did outstanding today," he said.
The Trojans' Alex Orr finished in fifth in 20:36.06 and Megan Reel took eighth in 21:05.61. Other top Chambersburg finishers were Carolyn Dann (15th, 21:54.80), Deija McBeth (17th, 22:03.70), Mara Leary (22nd, 22:13.25) and Ally Neidigh (25th, 22:28.31).
"We kind of had a rough start to our season," Monheim said. "The girls have been running well, but our competition has been outstanding. We needed a meet like this to get back on a roll. It was the first meet this year we could leave feeling good about the situation. This will be a good way to head into the middle of the season and get ready for the postseason."
Shippensburg's top finisher was Maria Owens in 23:43.68, good for 44th. Waynesboro's Bethany Carter took 62nd in 24:34.79.
In Class AA, Greencastle-Antrim finished in third place and its top runner, Caroline Schemel, also took third with a time of 20;30.06. Blue Devils runner Shelby Stouffer also cracked the top 10, finishing sixth
In the boys Class AAA race, Chambersburg took third with a team score of 108.
Daniel Klink was the Trojans' top finisher, taking third in 17:08.13, and teammate Seth Frey wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line in 17:13.15 for fifth. Tanner Amsley finished third for the team, taking 15th in 17:54.22. Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said those three ran the best races of their careers.
"I was extremely proud and pleased with the way they ran today," Ambrosio said. "We have a young team and they keep getting better every time we go out."
Other top finishers for Chambersburg were Chris Wurtz (33rd, 18:25.29), Ethan Overcash (52nd, 18:40.55) and Devan Thompson (70th, 19:04.33).
Shippensburg's top finisher was Nathan Thrush (39th, 18:30.25). Waynesboro's top finisher was Clay Foreman (40th, 18:30.76).
In Class AA, Greencastle-Antrim had the best team finish of area schools, taking eighth with 212 points. Blue Devils' runner Daulton Monn had the best area finish, taking third in 17:37.93. James Buchanan's Daniel Green (17:50.20) and Liam Corcoran (17:51.33) also cracked the top 10, taking fifth and sixth places.
Mercersburg's top finisher was Stefan Kempe, 37nd in 19:22.44.
