CARLISLE - In their first road dual meet on Tuesday afternoon, the Chambersburg cross country squads were swept by Carlisle in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division meet.

The girls race was won by Chamberburg's Courtney Group, who finished in 19:54.

"Courtney Group had a great race for us," Chambersburg girls coach Chris Monheim said. "She pulled away midway through and stayed there. It was nice to see her get under 20 minutes."

But the Thundering Herd took second and third, giving Carlisle a 25-31 win and leaving Alex Orr (20:36) as the only other Trojan in the top five. Megan Reel had a fine race, placing sixth overall in 20:43.

The other top-10 finisher for the Trojans was Deija McBeth, who finished in 21:02 for ninth place.

Monheim said his biggest worry so far this season is the lack of effort from everyone on the team.

"We're getting really good efforts from some kids and not from others; we really need it all to come together on one day," Monheim said. "Experience is going to help because we have some young kids on our team. We also need a win to get some confidence."

The boys team also struggled and ultimately lost 22-33.

Carlisle's Zack Brehm won the race, and Danny Klink (16:49) followed in second as the top Trojan finisher. Grant Frey was another top-five finisher, clocking in fourth at 17:06.

One improvement for Chambersburg was the decrease in the Nos. 1 through 5 gap, which was less than a minute and a half.

"I'm really happy

we went out after them," Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said. "Our time gap is coming down, and we're really improving."

Chambersburg also has a solid group, which it proved on Tuesday, with the Trojans taking places eight through 11.

"I'm really proud of the young guys on the team and how they handled their first away dual meet," Ambrosio said.
