Of note: A 16-0 run spanning the first and second quarters helped Chambersburg charge into the lead ... Jen Hamilton and Torrie Thomas combined for 25 points and 26 rebounds for the Trojans ... Aunjel VanBrakle led Ship with 12 points.
Records: The Trojans (7-12) travel to CD East tonight, 5:30 ... The Lady Hounds (12-5) host Newport on Wednesday, 7:30.
During one stretch in the third quarter, a fan yelled out, "How about a rebound, Ship?"
That pretty much summed up Monday night's non-league girls basketball game between the Shippensburg Lady Hounds and Chambersburg.
Behind Jen Hamilton and Torrie Thomas, the Trojans cleaned up on the boards and used an efficient fast break to roll by the Lady Hounds 56-36 at the CASHS Field House.
Thomas and Hamilton combined for 25 points and 26 rebounds, while Jade Flory passed out seven assists, including several pretty dishes during a big second-quarter surge.
"I thought boxing out and hitting the boards was a point of emphasis tonight and one of the things we stressed before the game," Trojan coach Anthony Rose said. "That's how they get a lot of their points, off of second-chance opportunities. We really did a good job offensively and defensively rebounding well."
With 3:40 left in the first quarter, Shippensburg led 10-7.
After that, it was all Trojans.
The Lady Hounds went more than eight minutes without a point and Chambersburg took advantage,
"We couldn't get a rebound, that was the story of the game," Ship coach Megan Carr said. "Nobody wanted to be physical and we let their size bother us. That's what the game came down to."
Leading 14-10 after one quarter, the Trojans hit another gear.
Flory led three fastbreak hoops to start the second quarter, twice finding Brittney Hickey with bounce passes under the basket for layups.
The Trojan point guard assisted on all four hoops in the second period for Chambersburg, which was in front 25-16 at intermission.
"Honestly, like I've said before, that's the type of offense I'd prefer playing," Rose said of the fastbreak points. "Hit the boards hard, hit the outlet pass and go. I thought in the second quarter we did that well."
The Lady Hounds were hanging around at 39-25 late in the third quarter before Chambersburg finally landed the knockout blow.
Hamilton sandwiched buckets around the third-quarter horn and Cayla Salmon and Hickey hit consecutive shots to make it 49-28 halfway through the final period. The rebounds showed up the most in the shot chart -- Chambersburg 68, Shippensburg 46.
The advantage allowed the Trojans multiple good looks in the paint.
"The most disappointing thing all night was our inability to get a rebound," Carr said. "We didn't shoot well and I was concerned about that, not being able to practice all weekend. We're a team that needs to shoot the ball well to succeed."
Rose said, "We knew (Aunjel) VanBrakle was a good player and (Jenna) Parson (5 points, 11 below her average) was averaging in double figures as well. We matched up well with them in man-to-man and did an excellent job in our defense."
Notes: Hamilton had a team-high 15 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Trojans and Hickey (11 points) and Thomas (10) also scored in double figures ... VanBrakle topped Ship with 11 points ... The Lady Hounds shot 26.1 percent and made only 8 of 19 free throws.
