Prior to Tuesday night, the York Suburban High Lady Trojans had a very successful weekend, having claimed the New Oxford Tip-Off tournament.

They came to McSherrystown looking to keep their momentum going and build a little confidence against a young Delone Catholic Squirette team.

Sonny Sheppard Gym, however, is not a very good place to try and build momentum or confidence.

The Squirettes got a basket from freshman guard Maria Photiades to start the game and never trailed the rest of the game.

Led by six first-quarter points from freshman point guard Sierra Moore, Delone built a 15-9 first-quarter lead on their way to a 64-42 win over the Lady Trojans.

coach Gerry Eckenrode had his players press virtually the whole game while looking to fastbreak on every missed shot by York Suburban.

"This is not my typical type of team that grinds it out," Eckenrode said. "This team is more of a speed team that we encourage to go to the basket on every opportunity.

"We got a lot of baskets off steals and that was our goal."

The Squirettes are also a very deep team that gets a lot of people involved both offensively and defensively.

Chelsea Hoffman and Janice Erbe came off the bench in the second quarter to add valuable defensive time as well as scoring. With Moore adding another four points and Hoffman posting five points in the second quarter, the Squirettes moved out to a 29-16 lead

at the half.

York Suburban was able to slow the Squirettes down a little in the third period as the Lady Trojans managed a 16-15 advantage in the period to trim one point off the Delone lead.

"We are going to give some things up," Eckenrode said. "I've resigned to the fact that we are going to give up some easy baskets. We are also going to create a lot of havoc and wear some people down. I think we did a good job of wearing their point guard down, who happens to be their best player."

That's exactly what happened as Delone outscored York Suburban 20-10 in the final quarter to win going away.

York Suburban never got any closer than 12 points after the third period.

Moore finished with a game-high 17 points while Erbe and Courtney Riggs each added 11. Bailey Rehnberg led York Suburban with 11 points.

Delone made the night complete with a 41-33 win in the jayvee game. Freshman Gabby Reichart led the way with 15 points.
