South Western High's girls basketball team bided its time Tuesday and finally was able to put it to Dover.
The Lady Mustangs held Dover to 13 second-half points and defeated the Lady Eagles 51-30 at South Western High School.
South Western (2-1, 1-0 YAIAA I) took advantage off a switch in the defense to put away the Lady Eagles. Dover switched from a man defense to zone, but Lady Mustangs coach Shannon Geiman kept her offense in man-to-man, allowing players to get open looks at the basket.
"I think we came together in the second half," Geiman said. "We're still a little bit out of whack with our rotations. We have some young kids that haven't played in the rotation before. We're still trying to find our way, but I think in the second half we changed some things up and pulled ahead."
Kristin Pappas was the beneficiary of a lot of those looks. She scored 11 of her game-high 14 points, including a 3-pointer, in the second half.
The defense also did its part in the second half by getting its hands in passing lanes and causing numerous turnovers.
"We changed the press in the second half and that's when we really started to get some hands on the balls and get some open layups," Geiman said. "That was probably the difference."
After racing out to a 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, South Western got back on its heels a little bit and let Dover back in the game.
Dover (0-2) closed within four at 15-11 by scoring eight of the
Geiman had to call a timeout early in the frame to try to get her team back on track.
"We were taking a lot of quick shots and not getting offensive rebounds," Geiman said. "We were kind of one-and-done and we can't play that kind of game. We're not a good enough shooting team."
Pappas' trey early in the third quarter started a 13-0 run for the Lady Mustangs and pushed the lead to 37-19.
Natalie Greenholt, who had an easy time camping out underneath the basket in the second half, scored six of her 10 points.
Kera Hill scored 13 points for the Lady Mustangs, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to put South Western up by 11.
"In the second half, we were able to run some things. They switched up their defense which I think helped a little bit. We were able to move the ball a lot and were starting to look for each other," Geiman said.
Amanda Snyder had 12 points for Dover while Erin Wetzel had 10.
