BERLIN - In the opening round of the District 5 girls basketball playoffs, McConnellsburg was denied a chance to advance by No. 2-seeded Berlin.

The Mountaineers used a strong first quarter to take down the Spartans (12-11), whose three-game win streak was ended.

The game was scoreless for the first two minutes, but once Berlin settled in, it outscored McConnellsburg 18-4.

"They played good defense, you've got to give them credit," McConnellsburg coach Dave Garland said. "Offensively, they surprised me because we had scouted them and (Aleesa) Fieg really didn't stand out then."

That certainly wasn't the case on Saturday afternoon when Fieg knocked down 30 points, including six 3-pointers.

Jessi Keefer paced McConnellsburg with 15 points.

"She had a really nice year," Garland said. "She's got some nice post moves and a little bit of an inside-out game too."

Nikki Fleming added nine points to McConnellsburg's total.
