Shoap, Chambersburg's senior 113-pounder, collected his second straight District 3 Class AAA championship on Saturday evening with a typical solid, no-frills performance in the final, a 7-3 victory over Central Dauphin's Austin Camacci.
He is only the second Trojan to earn a pair of district titles, along with Tyler Hart.
Then there is senior teammate Garett Hammond, whose final was anything but mundane. He was defeated 3-2 at 152 pounds by rival T.C. Warner of Cumberland Valley, a score that stood despite Hammond getting oh so close to a winning takedown at the buzzer.
The sound of the non-partisan fans who booed the officials' decision to not award the points underscored how controversial it was.
Hammond tried to shrug it off.
"It doesn't matter," he said. "Whether I finish first or fourth here, there is still one left and the state tournament is a different tournament."
In addition to the two Trojans, who will be making their third trip to Giant Center for states in two weeks, Shippensburg senior 285-pounder Cary Hess will make the trip for the first time. Hess won two consolation bouts, then fell 1-0 to Tom Devenney of Warwick in the consy final to place fourth.
The other five area wrestlers in action Saturday were eliminated - Greencastle-Antrim's Cody Carbaugh (113), Shippensburg's Dylan Herb (195) and Chambersburg's Garrett Kyner (120) and David Rump (126) in their first match.
The Trojans' Dontez King defeated Herb 4-2, and was agonizingly close to reaching the consolation final, but he was edged 2-1 in an overtime tiebreaker by Alex Cooley of Eastern York.
Shoap took a 3-0 decision over Derek Wilson of South Western in the semifinals, then handled Camacci in the final. He scored a takedown with one second left in the first period on a single-leg attack, tilted Camacci twice in the second for back points and a 6-0 lead, then coasted the rest of the way.
"I was trying to do the three C's - stay calm, cool and collected - before the match," Shoap said. "When I got that takedown, it opened things up for me. I think he just relaxed on that one. In the third, I was just trying to control his hands and stay out of trouble."
Chambersburg coach Doug Rine said, "Tanner had a nice tournament and was dominating in the final. He's beaten Camacci every time he's wrestled him, so we didn't do anything different, although Camacci tried to."
The biggest move in the 152 final - if you don't count the final non-Hammond takedown - was a single-leg takedown that Warner scored in the first period. Hammond escaped in the first, Warner in the second and Hammond in the third and that was it.
"I fell into his pace, and didn't get my offense going soon enough," Hammond said. "I need to not be so timid early and score points when I get the chance."
Rine agreed, saying, "Garett needs to get started earlier. Warner got the lead and tried to slow the match down, and he was successful at it."
On the debated takedown, Warner and Hammond were in neutral for a restart with 0:09 left. Hammond snatched Warner's leg on a single shot, then drove in and caught his other ankle, which dropped Warner to the mat. In the opinion of many, that was enough for a takedown, since Hammond covered Warner's hips and even exposed his back. What apparently saved Warner was that he reached back and grabbed one of Hammond's legs.
If nothing else, the call/no call will just make this dynamic rivalry burn that much brighter for states in two weeks.
Shippensburg's Hess, in addition to advancing to states, also tied Josh Proctor for the career wins record at Ship with 103.
He overcame an overtime match with South Western's Devon Ackerman to earn his trip to states. In OT, Hess rode Ackerman for 30 seconds in the second period, then escaped to take a 3-2 victory.
In the bout for third place, Hess gave up an escape to Devenney in the second period, then couldn't get out from bottom in the third and lost 1-0.
"In those kind of matches, you just have to wrestle smart, not try any desperation moves and wait for an opening," Hess said.
Greyhound coach Tony Yaniello said, "This was a tough weight class in this district and Cary proved he was right there with any of them. He's set a precedent for this program, showing that we can get somebody to states."
