After going 10-2 in the opening round at Hersheypark Arena on Friday afternoon, those 10 advancers were just 2-8 in the evening session, with Chambersburg's veteran stalwarts Tanner Shoap (113) and Garett Hammond (152) still alive to defend their district titles.
Of the eight who fell in the quarterfinals, six came back to win in the consolation round and remain in the hunt for qualification to the PIAA State Tournament. Those include Chambersburg's Garrett Kyner (120), David Rump (126) and Dontez King (195), as well as Shippensburg's Dylan Herb (195) and Cary Hess (285), and Cody Carbaugh of Greencastle-Antrim (113).
Trojan coach Doug Rine said, "Overall, it was a good day. When was the last time Chambersburg had five kids wrestling in the second day of districts?"
Chambersburg started with a buzz killer when 106-pounder Colin Runshaw failed to make weight (he had extra fluids from a trip to the emergency room Thursday night for a test). But Kyner put a jolt back into the team when he dropped Central Dauphin's Nick Ward to his back for a pin in 1:38 of the prelim round.
"I just needed to keep my balance and not get turned," Kyner said.
Rine said, "The other kid tried to elevate, but Garrett got his hips back and plopped him on the mat. That certainly got me psyched up."
Shoap had already scored three takedowns in a
"That was nice to see the younger guys get some wins," Shoap said.
The good times kept rolling. G-A's Carbaugh was sharp in a 12-0 major over Lake Laughman of New Oxford and Devin Reed of James Buchanan notched a
Shippensburg then went 3-0 - Chris Williams mauled Andrew Woltman of Hershey 14-6 at 170, Herb took a 7-1 nod over Zaire Lawrence of Dallastown and Hess stuck Brock Hartman of New Oxford in 1:37. It was Hess' 100th career victory; he is the third Greyhound to win 100 wrestling matches.
But then came the quarterfinals, and the competition got tougher.
Shoap won comfortably, 13-2, over Conner Moyer of Wilson, but it was a physical battle.
"He head butted me first, and I have a headache from that," Shoap said. "Then on the restart, he poked me in the eye. That definitely made me want to get the next takedown."
Hammond was also solid, with a 10-3 victory over Tanner Druck of Dallastown. Four takedowns made the difference.
"Since I lost last week, I wasn't seeded, and I knew there would be good competition here," Hammond said. "Druck was a pretty solid kid."
In Saturday morning's semifinals, Shoap (36-7) faces freshman Derek Wilson (25-7) of South Western, while Hammond (42-5) faces Austin Rose (43-4) of Central Dauphin for the third time this year.
"Here we go with the rubber match," Rine said - Hammond and Rose have split two bouts this year.
Of the eight losses in the quarters, three came by one point and another pair were by two points.
Kyner fell 1-0 to Johan Fisher of Gov. Mifflin when he couldn't break free from Fisher's leg ride in the third period. Rump fought off a succession of single-leg attacks by Cortlandt Schuyler of Manheim Twp. successfully, but he was taken down by an ankle pick in the third in a 3-2 defeat. King battled once-beaten Jeff Pickel of Lampeter-Strasburg, but a takedown at the edge late in the second was the difference in a 6-4 loss.
Rump said, "I got off to a bad start when I was on top. I usually do better than that."
Two takedowns by Gov. Mifflin's Jan Johnson did in Herb, who managed three escapes and a stalling point in a 5-4 loss. His teammate Hess was frustrated in a 4-2 loss to Bo Spiller of Solanco, with a the key move a Spiller reversal in the second on a petersen.
In the consolations, the three Trojans were living on the edge again. Kyner won 1-0, Rump took a 3-0 verdict and King escaped with a 3-2 victory on a third-period takedown when he spun behind.
"I was waiting for him to make a mistake and when he did I was able to get behind," King said.
The two Greyhounds rolled in their bouts, with Herb winning 10-0 and Hess picking up a second-period pin. Herb will face King in a consolation bout Saturday morning.
Carbaugh, the other consy winner, wrestled a familiar foe in JB's Faith. Carbaugh's two nearfalls in the second period gave him a 6-3 lead and it was enough to weather Faith's third-period reversal in a 6-5 decision.
JB coach Matt Gordon said, "I don't feel too good about today, but it was a learning experience for both of them (Faith and Reed). They'll know what to do next time."
